What residents received in 2025
Protection, access and hands-on stewardship.
Open space is not passive. The Town and community maintained land, trails and public access throughout the year.
Accessible public use
The new Sawmill Pond Accessible Trail added a gravel surface, benches and pond views. Kiosks, maps, blazes and signs were also improved.
Stewardship across town
Volunteer projects occurred at Rice Nature Preserve, Alton’s Way, Mount Marcy, Sawmill and Oakland; the Conservation Commission also reported land management, trail maintenance, wildlife monitoring and invasive-species work.
This is also a land-use choice: Keeping land in public or open-space use preserves recreation, habitat and town character even when no single dollar amount captures the value. Depending on ownership, legal protections and required approvals, the alternative could be choosing to develop or sell the property.
